Description:
This course, designed for writers with at a least basic grasp of dramatic writing concepts, will strive to give developing playwrights opportunities to learn through both lecture and practical application. Over five weeks, writers will focus on developing their use of dramatic structure, character development, and creating compelling plots with clear conflict and defined stakes. Towards this purpose, writers will work towards the completion of a one act play by the end of the course dates. Aside from lecture, writers have the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions, as well as offer guided feedback on the plays in development. Each week various writers will have the opportunity to present selections from their script for instructor and guided group feedback. All writers will receive notes from the instructor electronically on submitted work on a weekly basis. All writers are guaranteed at least one opportunity for in class reading.

About the Instructor:
Ryan Buen is an Anchorage-based actor, director, playwright, and producer. He holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Alaska Anchorage and a Master’s in Acting from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in England. Over the past 20 years, Ryan has worked with numerous theatre companies throughout Alaska, including Blue Chair Productions (of which he is the co-founder), TBA Theatre, Three Wise Moose, Cyrano’s, UAA Theatre, Anchorage Opera, ACT, TossPot Productions, Out North, and PWSC. He has been involved with the Valdez Theatre Conference for over 20 years, moving from intern, to playwright, and is currently the Play Lab Coordinator and a new play respondent. Ryan also co-teaches a workshop alongside Shane Mitchell for emerging playwrights in Anchorage through TBA Theatre, and has staged and written many new works with the company through Alaska Overnighters and various other projects. Ryan has a strong passion for new play development and production and is excited to share what knowledge he has gained, while creating a safe and welcoming space for writers to explore and discuss their ideas and craft.
