Oh the Places We Go: Writing the Place-Based Essay or Story with Daryl Farmer

Wednesdays, September 7, 14, 21 & 28, 2022
7 PM – 8 PM AKDT
Via Zoom
$70 Members | $85 Non-Members

This class takes place on more than one date (September 7, 14, 21 & 28) but must be registered for as a single class.

Often, the goal in any piece of writing is to transport our readers to a specific place in time. Place-based writing, as the name implies, is writing that explores a specific place or area. This might take the form of a remembered place from childhood, a recent journey you have taken, the place you live, or even a fictionalized space. No matter the form, much great writing grounds the reader into place, making the world on the page feel more alive. In this month-long workshop, we’ll discuss work by published authors, discuss some of our favorite places, complete and share fun writing exercises, and develop one final piece of writing to be shared with all (if willing) by the end.

Daryl Farmer is the author of Bicycling Beyond the Divide, a nonfiction book that chronicles a bicycle ride across the U.S. West, and Where We Land a collection of short fiction. His recent work has appeared in Terrain.org, Ploughshares, and Natural Bridges among other literary journals. He is an associate professor at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where he has served as director of the MFA program in creative writing. He is also an affiliated faculty member in the Northern Studies program, and for six years served as faculty member in the University of Alaska Anchorage low-residency MFA program.
