49 Writers is spooked, chilled, and thoroughly terrified to present Dead Writers, a community Halloween celebration! This event, which was pioneered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks MFA program, is all about celebrating our deceased literary heroes (and anti-heroes). Part open mic performance, part costume competition, the rules are simple: choose your favorite dead writer, dress up, and perform something that they wrote (or conceivably could have written). Prizes will be awarded for the best performance and the best costume. Come for the ghosts of authors past, and stay for the prizes, beverages, and good company!
Registration required; tickets available on a sliding scale of $15-25.

How will the competition be judged?
Prizes will be awarded by a panel of three very serious, highly esteemed, totally unbribe-able judges.
Are there any other rules or restrictions on performances?
Performances should be no longer than 5 minutes in length. Any performer who goes over the five minute mark will be disqualified from winning, and may get chased off the stage by the ghost of Michel Foucault.
Can I impersonate a living writer? What about a singer-songwriter?
Yes and yes!
Can I attend if I don’t want to perform?
Yep!
I’m not a member of 49 Writers – can I still come?
Affirmative! This event is open to the public.
Can I buy tickets at the door?
Yes – a small number of tickets will be reserves for door sales on a first-come-first-serve basis. However, if at all possible, we strongly recommend buying tickets in advance to reserve your spot.
Will food and beverages be available?
Yes, food and beverages (including beer and wine) are available to purchase from Writer’s Block.
What should I bring?
Plan to bring your costume, any props or reading materials you need, and extra cash to tip your bartenders, bribe your judges, and support 49 Writers!
Can my kids come?
Yes, there is no restriction on the age limit for attendees. However, parents should be aware that some performances may include adult content or themes.
