Retreats

For over ten years, 49 Writers has sponsored the annual Tutka Bay Writers Retreat at the world-renowned Tutka Bay Lodge, thanks to the generous support of lodge co-owner and fellow Alaskan writer and chef, Kirsten Dixon. Acclaimed authors from across the country have come to Tutka Bay to lead two days of instruction in the serene and contemplative setting, where participants enjoy gourmet meals, strolls on the beach, quiet writing time, and supportive literary company.

In more recent years, a group of 49 Writers members in Juneau has organized biannual generative writing retreats at the nearby National Shrine of Saint Therese. Participants share meals and lodging in the Shrine’s main lodge, and enjoy the beautiful ocean setting, but mostly they come to take advantage of the time away from the demands of daily life to make progress on writing projects. The weekend retreat typically takes place in the late spring and early fall.

49 Writers recognizes that retreats provide an invaluable opportunity to writers, and that a large beautiful state like Alaska presents many possibilities for small creative gatherings. We welcome suggestions from our members on ways to make these opportunities more widely available and locations we might explore.
