Live from Storyknife is a monthly reading series featuring the guest residents of the Storyknife Writers Retreat.

Jasmine An is from the Midwest. She is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Naming the No-Name Woman (Winner of the 2015 Two Sylvias Press Chapbook Prize) and Monkey Was Here (Porkbelly Press 2020), and her creative work can be found online in journals such as Poetry Northwest, Waxwing, New Delta Review, and Black Warrior Review’s Boyfriend Village, among others. Jasmine is currently pursuing her PhD in English and Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Michigan and lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand as a Visiting Researcher at Chiang Mai University.

Maya Beck is a broke blipster, lapsed Muslim, recovering otaku, pan demigirl, socially-anxious social justice bard, and speculative fiction writer currently pursuing a creative writing MFA at UCSD. She is a blended descendant of displaced Bantu, Fulani, and Hausa peoples, born on Kumeyaay land with a Detroit mom/Chicago dad Black pedigree and passionate about writing about the diversity within Blackness: wallflowers, tomboys, nerds, artists, punks, loners, and daydreamers. Maya is an alum of writing programs including VONA, Kimbilio, Tin House, and The Loft. Her writing has been nominated for the Pushcart and the Best of the Net. Alessandra Bautze holds an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from The University of Texas at Austin, as well as a B.A. in The Writing Seminars and Film & Media Studies from Johns Hopkins University. Most recently, her screenplay RACING THE WOLF GOD won Best Screenplay at the 2021 Anchorage International Film Festival. In addition to her work as a writer, Alessandra has also worked as a script consultant, most recently for SignWorld Studios, a Deaf-owned production company focusing on producing authentic media in American Sign Language and English. Alessandra believes in the power of language to connect communities. For the past two years, she has been Visiting Assistant Professor of Screenwriting at The University of Iowa. This August, she will start as Assistant Professor of Screenwriting at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Mary Mercier, writing from her home in the Midwest, finds inspiration in the deep and wild pockets of nature. Her poems have appeared in The Comstock Review, Stoneboat, Analog Sea Review, Mezzo Cammin, Spillway, and other journals. Her chapbook Small Acts was published by Parallel Press. She has also collaborated with artists, working in particular with Martha Glowacki and her installation, “Starry Transit,” staged at the Washburn Observatory of the University of Wisconsin.

Tanya Rey is a queer Cuban-American writer who was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Her writing has appeared in Guernica, Granta, The Sun, Roads & Kingdoms, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, The Georgia Review, and Catapult, among others. She holds an MFA degree in fiction from New York University and has received fellowships from The Georgia Review, Rona Jaffe Foundation, San Francisco Writers Grotto, MacDowell, Hedgebrook, UCross, Blue Mountain Center, I-Park, and others. An early draft of her novel in progress was selected as a semi-finalist for the James Jones First Novel Fellowship; excerpts have been published in Guernica and The Georgia Review. Her writing was shortlisted for the 2020 Disquiet Literary Prize and 2021 Granum Foundation Prize.

Minda Honey is a Louisville, Kentucky writer. Her writing has been featured by Longreads, The Oxford American, The Guardian, The Washington Post and appears in multiple anthologies.
