Making Persuasive Arguments with Video Essays: A Weekend with Jonathan McIntosh
Saturday & Sunday
December 3 & 4, 2022
Anchorage Museum SEED Lab
111 W. 6th Ave
Workshop is FREE, but space is limited.

Sunday, December 4: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM & 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
This intensive workshop will focus on giving participants the tools to create their own video essay, in which they deconstruct elements from popular entertainment and form a persuasive argument. Participants will learn many of the necessary steps in the pre-production process, including: media analysis, online research, and video essay script writing. As part of the workshop, McIntosh will also offer participants a brief overview of the technical side of online video creation, with tips on collecting media sources, video editing, and publishing to online platforms like YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram. Each attendee will receive the knowledge and guidance to leave this workshop with their own video essay script.
Jonathan McIntosh, known as the Pop Culture Detective, is an award-winning and nationally celebrated cultural critic and video essayist who has been featured in The New York Times, WIRED, Washington Post, LA Times, and NPR. He has been using online video tools to deconstruct popular entertainment for critical and educational purposes since before the invention of YouTube. His current project, The Pop Culture Detective Agency, works to build critical media literacy online through a series of long-form video essays exploring the intersections of politics, masculinity, and entertainment.
This event is supported, in part, by a grant from the Atwood Foundation. Co-sponsors include the Anchorage International Film Festival and the Anchorage Museum.
