The Voice is a Helix: Dual Narration and Psychic Distance in Life and Writing

Details: This four-week virtual class series will consist of four 2-hour sessions.

Description: Memoir, personal essay, and life writing pulls two ways: in, toward individual idiosyncracies—and out, toward the universal and the deeply shared. This workshop presents a core suite of techniques essential to such doubling. We focus in particular on the narrator, the voice that resembles “you” but that, in our approach, merits careful sculpting and development according to principles of narrative stance, dual narration, and psychic distance. Sessions will combine mini-lectures with readings, group discussion, writing prompts, and rapid-fire workshops in which participants have the opportunity to share and explore one another’s writing.
This class will be most useful for nonfiction writers with intermediate writing experience; however, all are welcome!

About the Instructor: Corinna Cook is the author of Leavetakings: Essays. She is a former Fulbright Fellow, an Alaska Literary Award recipient, and a Rasmuson Foundation individual project awardee.
