49 Writers is thrilled to partner with the National Book Foundation on this exciting event! Join National Book Award-honored author and Anchorage native Leigh Newman as she discusses her short story collection, Nobody Gets Out Alive (2022). The stories in Nobody Gets Out Alive jump between decades and centuries of Alaska’s past and present, at once full of hope and of despair. Join Leigh for a reading and conversation on creative inspiration, craft, and community, moderated by Daryl Farmer. The event will include a reading, conversation, and audience Q&A.

Presented in partnership with the National Book Foundation and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

About Leigh Newman: Leigh Newman’s story collection Nobody Gets Out Alive was Longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction. Her stories have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Mystery and Suspense, One Story, Tin House, Electric Literature, American Short Fiction, and McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern. Her memoir about growing up in Alaska, Still Points North, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. In 2020, she was awarded a Pushcart Prize and an American Society of Magazine Editor’s prize, as well as received The Paris Review’s Terry Southern Prize for Humor. She currently serves as the Books Director for Oprah Daily and the Editorial Director of Oprah’s Book Club.

Daryl Farmer is the author of Bicycling beyond the Divide, a nonfiction book that chronicles a bicycle ride across the US West, and Where We Land a collection of short fiction. His recent work has appeared in Terrain.org, Ploughshares, and Natural Bridges among other literary journals. He is a professor at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where he teaches creative writing, has served as director of the MFA program, and is affiliated faculty for the Northern Studies program. For six years, he served as a faculty member at the University of Alaska Anchorage low-residency MFA program.
