49 Writers is thrilled to partner with the National Book Foundation on this exciting event! Join National Book Award-honored author and Anchorage native Leigh Newman to discuss her short story collection, Nobody Gets Out Alive (2022), and preoccupations with people, place, and her home state. The event will include a reading, conversation, and audience Q&A.

Moderated by writer Lily H. Tuzroyluke (author of Sivulliq: Ancestor) and presented in partnership with the National Book Foundation and the Anchorage Public Library.

This event is free and open to the public. Advance registration preferred; walk-ins welcome.

About Leigh Newman: Leigh Newman’s story collection Nobody Gets Out Alive was Longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction. Her stories have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Mystery and Suspense, One Story, Tin House, Electric Literature, American Short Fiction, and McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern. Her memoir about growing up in Alaska, Still Points North, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. In 2020, she was awarded a Pushcart Prize and an American Society of Magazine Editor’s prize, as well as received The Paris Review’s Terry Southern Prize for Humor. She currently serves as the Books Director for Oprah Daily and the Editorial Director of Oprah’s Book Club.

 

About Lily H. Tuzroyluke: Lily H. Tuzroyluke, author of Sivulliq: Ancestor, is Inupiaq, Tlingit, and Nisga’a. Formerly employed in Tribal Government, she believes in protecting Tribal Sovereignty and subsistence ways of life. She lives a sober and smoke-free lifestyle, now over 22 years sober. Lily currently lives in Anchorage, Alaska with two children and a cairn terrier. Her next book is based in a 1950 Indigenous Residential School.
