The Basics of Writing Satire with Joanna Castle Miller

Saturdays, January 7, 14, 21 & 28, 2023
1 PM – 3 PM AKDT
Via Zoom
$140 Members | $165 Non-Members

This class takes place on more than one date (January 7, 14, 21 & 28) but must be registered for as a single class.

Join playwright and satirist Joanna Castle Miller for this series of classes and exercises designed to help you write sharp, funny satire that gets your point across and helps people see the world differently.

We’ll start by looking at the fundamentals of satire. In following sessions, you’ll experiment with your own point of view across a few major genres. You’ll leave with the tools you need to write short-form satirical work, produce satirical sketches, and submit your work/apply at places like McSweeney’s and The Onion

Whether you want to find the humor in today’s wild headlines, develop a parody of your favorite movie, or just punch up your regular writing, this class will leave you ready to expose the world’s flaws and laugh until you forget to cry.

Joanna Castle Miller is an award-winning NY-based satirist, playwright, and performer. Her humor writing has appeared in McSweeney’s, Time, The Hill, Applause Books, and The Belladonna, and her short-form satire and standup have been featured by Funny or Die, WhoHaha, iO, UCB, and Comedy Cake. She is a composer/lyricist of FOX NEWS! the Musical and former writer for the political sketch show Top Story Weekly. Screenplays include Keep This Far Apart, Sorta My Thing, Ash (Oscar-qualified), and the web series Red, White, and Dad. She was a 2021 New York Stage and Film Nexus Fellow and is currently under commission with We the Women, and her most recent plays include the dark satires INFERNA, EKPHRASIS and SH@MED (Kilroys’ List, Jewish Plays Project Finalist). Originally from Memphis, Joanna enjoys good bourbon, bad words, and quality time.
