Worldbuilding in Horror

with Leslie J. Anderson

Date: Sunday, May 12, 2024
Time: 11am-3pm
Location: Virtual (Zoom)

Description: Worldbuilding is a term usually associated with fantasy or science fiction, a reality which needs to be imagined from the ground up in order to sustain a believable plot, but every piece of writing relies on worldbuilding to one degree or another, and it’s an oft-ignored element of Horror. It’s a great way to begin thinking about horror as well as an excellent element to improve and sharpen your more advanced skills.

In this 4-hour workshop we’ll be looking at the world building questions and answers supplied in classic horror stories and movies, such as The Shining, as well as less classic examples like Bridgerton. No really.

How does worldbuilding change a slasher into body horror or a classic ghost story? In this class we will cover basic worldbuilding, the way it influences and defines some classic horror movies, and the changes we can make to our own worldbuilding to adjust its genre and characters. We’ll have some time to write a short piece and come back together to discuss our work.

Writers of all genres and skill levels are welcome.
