It’s our pleasure to announce the Spring 2013 class schedule
at 49 Writers, which we hope includes something of interest to
everyone. This season our faculty includes popular writers from points north and south, whose experience as authors and educators brings breadth and
depth to the lineup. The common theme that has emerged is our desire to
understand the boundaries between genres: Christine Byl (Healy), who will be a
featured 2013 blogger, explores how story chooses its form in Writing
Fiction and Non; Rich Chiappone (Anchor Point) will get us thinking about the uses of
humor in writing of all genres in Bring in the Clowns; and Eva Saulitis (Homer) will address the boundaries between poetry and creative nonfiction in
Prose/Poem.
Kathleen Tarr, one of our 2012 Best of the Blog finalists,
will delve into Spiritual Writing in a two-week, 12-hour workshop.
Lorena Knapp, after the success of her half-day workshop in fall 2012,
continues Building a Platform as Writer as a four-session series that
investigates the topic more closely and includes individual mentoring
time. And, in response to your requests, Andromeda Romano-Lax will lead a
six-week Revision Intensive for writers who want to workshop one piece
of work in a small group (registration limited to six). Andromeda is
also offering two Elements classes: Anatomy of the Sentence and Anatomy
of the Scene.
Building
on the popularity of Amy O’Neill Houck’s fall class in Juneau, she will
be teaching two beginning workshops in spring 2013─ Characters: Real
and Imagined and What Next? Taking Story Starts and Rough Drafts through
Development and Revision. In Palmer, during National Poetry Month,
Julie LeMay will offer a Sunday workshop at Fireside Books─Poetry: The
Mysterious and the Obscure.
And
that’s not all! Want to work one-on-one with a published author? If you
write science fiction or nonfiction and are ready for some individual
mentoring, consider our Science Fiction Apprenticeship with Fairbanks
author David Marusek or our Nonfiction Apprenticeship with
Virginia-based Leslie Hsu Oh. Registration for all classes opens on January 1 and you can preview the details here.

It’s
become a 49 Writers tradition to welcome the new year with Resolve to
Write gatherings, at which our members and others in the literary
community assemble to socialize and to share their writing aspirations
for the coming months. In Anchorage, we have an event planned for Friday, January 11
– more details to follow soon. If you live in another community and
would like to plan your own event, just email us and we’ll connect you
with other members in your area.
Entries for the AWP Award Series in poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and the novel will be accepted from January 1 through February 28, 2013. The Award Series now accepts only online submissions through Submittable. Consult their guidelines as you prepare your manuscript.

Anchorage essayist and author Bill Sherwonit will teach a 12-week nature and travel writing class beginning January 16,
in the Sierra Club office downtown. Participants in this workshop-style
class will explore and refine their own writing styles, with an
emphasis on the personal essay form. The class will also read and
discuss works by some of America’s finest nature and travel writers,
past and present. The cost is $240. To sign up for this Wednesday night
