Andromeda: Raven Place has a new home beginning in November!

History, charm and a view of Cook Inlet — read on for more details…

Earlier this summer our landlord decided to sell our building on L Street (effective Nov.1), prompting us to transition away from the guesthouse business and head into the community in search of a replacement facility for classes and author events. We knew our next move would say a lot about our organization, including how we, and our community, respond to change. The answer is: quite well! In November, we’ll be moving into another downtown building as charming as our first. We are thrilled with our future facility and we are grateful for the generous assistance that helped us locate it.

(Ack — so formal! I wrote this for our e-newsletter but in blogworld, speaking to our loyal readers and friends, what I most want to say is ‘Check it out! Look at the photos above!’ And: ‘Can you believe this place was built in 1917? The Russian Revolution was underway and Anchorage was barely past its tents-on-a-mudflats stage. Wow!’ But back to the official announcement…)

Starting Nov. 1, through a shared use agreement with Anchorage Historic Properties, Raven Place — the Anchorage headquarters of the 49 Alaska Writing Center — will be located at 645 3rd Avenue, just next door to the Snow Goose restaurant and two doors down from Marx Brothers Cafe. The 3rd street cottage houses the office of Anchorage Historic Properties and has a suitably sized and well-lit classroom space with great views as well as an inspiring feel, thanks to the historic nature of the structure.

Having weathered this challenge, we can focus on our mission: supporting writers at every stage of their development while building an audience for Alaska literature. In practical terms, this means – among other things — offering quality writing instruction. Registration is underway for clinics, classes, and workshops that begin in October. Is this the fall you try your hand at flash fiction, or revise a memoir you’ve already written, or learn promotion skills that will earn your published book the attention it deserves? Is this the fall you give yourself the gift of taking your own writing – whether it’ s a profession or an avocation — more seriously? Please visit our new website at ww.49writingcenter.org to learn more and register online.
