Ela: 49 Writers Weekly Round-up

Readers are weighing in on the best worst writing in our Third Annual “Ode to a Dead Salmon” contest, thanks to a nice write-up in Wednesday’s Anchorage Daily News .  It’s not too late: you have until Monday, August 15 to vote.  Check out our three finalists and pick your favorite in our sidebar poll.

A big thanks to everyone at 49 Writers who helped out with the ASD Writing Academy this week.  We heard rave reviews, and we’ll soon be scheming to help out with a similar event on November 12.  And while we’re dolling out thanks, here’s a big one to the good folks at Epicenter Press for joining us in sponsoring Alaska Book Week Oct. 8-15.  Authors, publishers, booksellers, librarians, teachers, book clubs: if you haven’t already told us how you plan to celebrate Alaska Books during that week,  make haste to www.alaskabookweek.com to fill out our quick form (and to check out the pages where 49 Writers volunteer Cheryl Lovegreen is documenting all the good projects that are beginning to roll in).

Registration for our fall term begins on August 15.  You can preview our great line-up of courses, keeping in mind that instructor bios have yet to go up, and we’re in the processing of adding a fiction workshop with David Vann.

In case we missed it: a proper thanks to Susanna Mishler for the evocative posts she wrote as our July featured author, and a formal hello to this month’s featured author Mike Kincaid.  And in case you missed it, we’d love your take on our plans for a 49 Writers Café at Out North in Anchorage, as well as for our new WYAK (Write Young Alaska) outreach effort; surveys are in the sidebar.  At WYAK, there’s also a great Zombie Writing Contest  for young writers that begins Monday, August 15, with entries due by September 2.

Today, Friday August 12, and tomorrow, Saturday August 13, 7.30pm, Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, dramatized by Richard R. Geroge, will play at the UAS Noyes Pavilion, Juneau.

On Tuesday August 16, 5pm, author Barbara Mee will be signing copies of her book Senator Ted and Mee at Gulliver’s Books, Fairbanks.

On Tuesday August 16, 7pm, the Alaska Writers Guild will present Mike Dillingham. Loussac Library, 36th St, Anchorage.

On Wednesday August 17, 7pm, it’s time for Poetry Parley again: this month the featured poet is David Wagoner.
