Festivities are in order! Yes, a lovely Monday holiday beckons. But there’s also this great news: 49 Writers/49 Alaska Writing Center is this year’s recipient of the “Contributions to Literacy Award” presented by the Alaska Center for the Book. Carol Sturgelewski called to deliver this wonderful news, noting in particular the impact of this blog, our roundup, our calendar, and all the statewide networking that happens with the help of our readers, friends, fans, and of course our fantastic volunteers. We’ll receive the plaque and official recognition on your behalf on July 19 at the UAA/MFA faculty readings in Anchorage.
While you’re celebrating, don’t forget to sign up for our Screenwriting Roundtable with Dave Hunsaker (July 11, Out North Theater) and to direct young writers to our Raven Words Summer Youth Writing Workshops (workshops begin July 18; applications for the free workshop “Your Alaska Online Travel ‘Zine” are due July 6). Visit www.49writingcenter.org / Classes and Programs for details, or email 49writers@gmail.com.
On Thursday, July 7, at 6pm, Michael Travis will be signing copies of Melozi, his coming-of-age memoir about working at a remote camp north of the Yukon River, at Barnes and Noble, 200 East Northern Lights, Anchorage.
On Friday, July 8, from 3-4.30pm, the UAA Campus Bookstore presents a Conversation with Linda McCarriston, Full Professor in the Low-Residency MFA Program at UAA. Reflections on life, poetry, words and politics: free and open to all, with free parking.
Happy 4th of July!
Congratulations on the well deserved award!
49 Writers is a remarkable phenomenon.
