When I talk to writers from other parts
of the county, as I recently did at the Association of Writers and Writing
Programs conference in Seattle, I’m secretly thinking of how lucky I am to call
Alaska home. We writers support one
another in this state, and we also receive a heck of a lot of love from Alaskan
readers and big institutions such as our libraries, newspapers and
universities. In fact, I started to feel
a bit spoiled after talking to several Outside writers who were having
difficulty with competition and envy in their own communities. In Alaska, we writers celebrate one another’s
accomplishments happily.

A few months ago, I found out that I’d
been selected as APU’s 2014 Writer-in-Residence. I was ecstatic, of course, especially when
they said I would be able to plan the public writing event this semester. I knew immediately that I wanted to share the
stage in some way with my community of writers.
I honestly don’t think that I would be publishing if I lived anywhere else. I have three kids, several part-time jobs,
and a needy German Shepherd. I always
make time to write, but to pursue the business of publishing? The reason I put forth the effort is because
my writing community encourages me on a regular basis.

So, with a heart full of gratitude, I’ve
decided that the APU event coming up this Friday, March 28th, will be “Speed-dating with Alaska’s Authors” featuring
fiction writers Deb Vanasse, Mei Mei Evans, Lee Goodman, Kris Farmen, Don
Rearden, and myself, plus Vered Mares of the publishing company VP&D
House. We’re inviting the public to
circulate in small groups and engage in a more intimate dialogue with each of us,
asking questions that don’t get asked in more formal programs. I truly hope to see you there!!!
