Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our first
Crosscurrents event of 2013, an on-stage conversation between Alaska Writer
Laureate Nora Marks Dauenhauer and Diane Benson. We were honored to have the
opportunity to spend the evening in their company, to enjoy Nora’s wit and
wisdom, and to hear her spirited reading of
one of her Raven plays and her poem, “How to Make Good Baked
Salmon.” The Anchorage Library Foundation sponsored Nora’s travel to Anchorage
and Loussac Library staff worked behind the scenes to ensure all
went smoothly.
Thanks too to the Alaska Writers Guild for including the event in their
monthly program.
The spring season at 49

instructor Cheryl Lovegreen led a writing workshop on journaling with the
Bethel WYAK chapter via Alaska OWL in the debut session of the equipment at the Loussac Library and the Bethel Consortium Library. An enthusiastic group of 10 students, ages
12-17, participated. Thanks to Kyle Marvin in Bethel for coordinating and to
the Alaska State Council on the Arts for helping to fund this program.

Oregon writer laureate Kathleen Dean Moore is the keynote author/speaker, and also new to the faculty this year is Howard Weaver, Pulitizer Prize winning former editor of the Anchorage Daily News and now an author. For those of you interested in making the jump from journalism to writing non-fiction or fiction, this is the year for you! Other faculty members include John Straley, Kim Heacox, Andromeda Romano-Lax, Lynn Schooler, Dave Hunsaker, and Heather Lende. Faculty will serve on panels to discuss topics like overcoming writer’s block, the path to publication, assessing reader needs, and writing personal essays, screenplays, and fiction.
