We’re
delighted to announce two additions to the calendar of 49 Writers author
events!
On
Friday, October 18, 7pm, not one but two Alaska State Writer Laureates will
read from their extensive body of work at the UAA/APU Consortium Library (LIB
307). Nora Marks Dauenhauer and Richard Dauenhauer are in the unique position
of being the current and a former Alaska State Writer Laureate (as Dick jokes, “his-and-hers”).
Richard has a new book coming out, Benchmarks:
New and Selected Poems
(distributed by University of Chicago for
University of Alaska Press). You won’t want to miss this! Our thanks go to the
UAA Creative Writing and Literary Arts Department for partnering with us on
this event.
On
Thursday, December 5, 7pm, Marybeth Holleman will give a
Reading & Craft Talk at Great Harvest Bread Company, entitled “Among
Wolves: How a Book Found Me.” Tune in to Alaska Public Radio’s “Talk of Alaska” on Oct. 8, 10am, when she’ll be talking with Steve Heimel about her book. You are also invited to celebrate the book’s release at a special event on Oct. 20, 3:30-5:30pm, at the Loussac Library’s Wilda Marston Theatre, where Marybeth will share some of Gordon Haber’s photographs, stories, and insights about Alaska’s wolves. A book signing will follow, with royalties donated to cosponsors Alaska Wildlife Alliance, National Parks Conservation Association, Center for Biological Diversity, and Alaska Center for the Environment.
Over
the last week we have continued to work on planning and preparations for Alaska
Book Week! Check the Alaska Book Week
website
for a full listing of activities around the state. We are indebted
to volunteer Mary Kudenov for doing such an incredible job as our Alaska Book
Week coordinator this year – participation has increased dramatically, and
communities from all over are planning events.
Be
sure to add the first annual Great Alaska Book Fair to your calendar, Saturday, Oct. 12, 10am-5pm at APU, an extravaganza
being organized by The Alaska Writers Guild and Alaska Pacific University, with
support from The Alaska Dispatch. If you’re a
published Alaskan author, there’s still time to sign up for the Book Fair: registration
deadline is Monday, Sept. 30. Click
here to register
.
This
coming week I’ll be in Juneau for a couple of days, where I look forward to
meeting members, other writers, and partners to discuss how 49 Writers can best
support the local writing community.
Do
you live or work in downtown Anchorage? If so, we need a volunteer to help
